Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) today announced the recipients of its annual Awards of Excellence which includes William Amos, MP and Parliamentary Secretary to Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, as a 2020 Forest Community Champion.
FPAC presents its Awards of Excellence to recognize leadership in the sector and to honour the achievements of our workers and community partners. The Forest Community Champion award is presented to a leader who demonstrates support for the forestry sector and its contributions to Canada’s environmental, economic, and social priorities.
“MP Amos has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to the communities he serves in Western Quebec and to the forestry sector jobs and services that are essential to his constituents,” said FPAC President and CEO Derek Nighbor. “At the same time, he has been a strong advocate of forestry jobs, sustainable forest management, and improving broadband access to rural communities. This support has been especially appreciated in the face of the softwood labour dispute and the pandemic. We are grateful for Will’s engagement on the issues of importance to our workers and forestry communities in Quebec and across Canada.”
William Amos was first elected Member of Parliament for Pontiac in 2015. Following his re-election in 2019, he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry. Prior to entering federal politics, Amos distinguished himself as a lawyer specializing in environmental law. He has been a leader on legal and strategic issues related to energy, climate, and the environment for 20 years.
According to Mr. Amos, “forestry communities took root in the Outaouais region many generations ago and helped define the Canadian nation. Today, our forest industry is recognized worldwide for sustainable forest management. But we must continue to work hard to secure the health and vitality of our forests, our watersheds and climate, and our wood products economy. I am truly honoured to be recognized this year by FPAC as a Forest Community Champion.”
